A PERFECT COMPANION
Finding a good condition or matching pillion pad for your Bates seat can be difficult. So we thought having a good quality, accurate Bates pillion pad would be a good idea as well.

We use the same great leather on our pillion pads as we do on our seats. And just like our seats, we have done everything we can to make sure they are exactly the same as the originals in every way. The only part we couldn’t bring ourselves to do the same is the fiber board like base that was originally used on Bates pillion pads. These bases are well know for cracking and deteriorating quite easily, and is often the reason that many of the original pads are in such a bad shape. Instead we chose make the base out of high quality vegetable tanned leather. Tough and durable yet able to mold to different sizes and profiles of various fenders.
We produce 2 different sizes of pillion pads that Bates did. The smaller size has pad dimensions of 3.75” wide and 7” long and the larger size pad has dimensions of 4.5” wide and 9” long. They are available in both tuck and roll or plain top versions and also come in either black or white.
A WORD ABOUT LEATHER
Modern leather is aniline dyed. This means the hide is dyed all the way through the skin, then a clear top coat is put on top for protection. This leather will almost never show any wear. Older leather was instead pigmented. Put simply, this means the top of the hide was painted. This is why they wear after time and begin to show the beige color of the hide under the pigmented top coat.
This is what makes original Bates seats like a good baseball glove or a vintage pair of Levi’s - they just get better with age. We realized a Bates reproduction would never be right if the leather wasn't right. That's what sets our seats apart; we have used the right leather so they also get better with age. There is no fake patina here, we leave the aging up to you. |
